Dreams are a powerful mode of communication, whether it is the Universe striving to communicate with you, your inner self speaking with you or your subconscious revealing prophecy or future events, if you aren't paying attention to your dreams you should be.
The study of dreams or "dream analysis" has been covered by many experts, perhaps most notably Freud and Jung. While it was mainly there different takes on interpreting dreams that caused the rift between them, I believe both made some valuable contributions to this field of study.
What do your dreams mean? Well, first we have to look at the different types of dreams. There are dreams that are really nothing more than our daily experiences reflected back to us. You might have watched a scary movie and then had a nightmare; continued an argument you had at work; or had a sexual encounter with someone you are attracted to in your daily life. These dreams typically are simple reflections injected with your underlying desires, the desires that you are sometimes to afraid to express during the day.
Some dreams are recurring, meaning simply that we dream the same or similar dreams over and over. These typically involve an issue we need to resolve and the way to stop the dream is to resolve the issue. Sometimes these dreams tell us very important things about ourselves or our destiny. Repetition happens when we need to be paying more attention.
Sometimes we have dreams where we are told or shown that we need medical attention. I had such a dream months before I physically manifested visible signs of cancer. In the dream a man walked up to me and told me I had cancer and should see a doctor. This is our bodies way of warning us before things become to difficult to treat. If you dream you have a medical problem, get prompt attention to it!
An exciting type of dream is the prophetic dream. In these dreams we see a future event before it happens. It is my belief that the subconscious mind lives outside of the time continuum. Nothing can be more exciting than to dream something only to have it become realized later. (Assuming it is a positive outcome.) Much like this is the sense of deja' vu which is in my opinion, a prophetic dream we forgot and then remembered as the live event takes place.
Sometimes we have dreams that are much more symbolic in nature. Often they will involve mythological creatures, very vivid coloration and impress upon us deeply a sense of awe and wonder when we awake. They require a great deal of analysis to understand but can provide some incredible information.
Bottom line with dreams is that you should be paying more attention to them. It is very prudent to keep a journal by your bed so that each morning you can write down your dreams. You'll often be amazed at what you can learn from them when you put this into your daily routine. You will also notice that you remember more of your dreams and in greater detail when you begin recording them.
